THE ICONGRAPHY OF JAPAN TATTOOS.

CHERRY BLOSSOM (Sakura)

Japan's national flower. Considered a celebratory SYMBOL, and represents the temporary and cyclc nature if life.

WAVES (Nami)

often used as the background if tattoo, the swell if hte sea is analogous to ETERNITY and LONGEVITY.

BUTTERFLY (Cho)

Represents REBIRTH or METAMORPHOSIS. In japan, butterflies are said to be shape-shifting spirits. While they have positive connotations of freedom and grace, they can also represent death of, conversely, immortality, pleasure and promiscuity.

Dragon (Tatsu)

The dragon represents the male, east , heaven and rain. It is associated with water and heaven, as well as a symbol of IMERIAL POWER.

PHOENIX (Ho-o)

Considered a bird of paradise, the phoneix symbolises PEACE , GRACE and BENEVOLENCE. Said to be born from a HIRYU DRAGON, and is the servant of emperor of heaven that being with it great FORTUNE.

Carp (Koi)

Used often in Japanese Tattooing, this fish lives for an incredibly long time, and represents perseverance, as it swims upstream. It i considered an AUSPICIOUS symbol
